Consciousness and The Ideal of Self:
Martin Luther King Jr. was searching for stability. He wanted to find a firm, unchanging structure for his life. But his efforts to achieve this ideal were often vain, because unconsciously, he was also inhabited by the opposite desire. Every time he reached what he believed to be a good balance, he realized he wanted something entirely different. He should become aware that the concepts of stability and balance are difficult to apply to life. By definition, life is movement, change, and perpetual instability.
At the moment of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birth, the two celestial “lights” (the sun and the moon) were symmetrically aligned. This is a portent of harmony between the masculine and feminine archetypes which is extremely beneficial. It is the source of balance and understanding between the two main psychological realms which may be said to compose the personality. Martin Luther King Jr. thus enjoys a positive complementarity and understanding between the conscious and unconscious aspects of his psyche, between his determination and his routines, between his drive for self-assertion and his receptivity, his ideal and his sensitivity.
Martin Luther King Jr.’s parents almost certainly reflected a positive image of the marriage relationship to him, and it is likely that they encouraged him to develop his own individuality. As a result, he was and is able to be comfortable with himself as he is instead of striving to attain his parents’ ideal. This has definitely contributed to the maintenance of a good relationship with them and the rest of the family.
In Martin Luther King Jr.’s emotional relationships with his peers, one of the effects of the masculine/feminine harmony is that the images his ego projects on the other are especially constructive. The bonds of the relationship are not felt to be constraints, the energy which flows between the two people is a source of mutual happiness, not regret. No major personal conflicts are projected onto the “other” – that is, the significant other.
Martin Luther King Jr. has a taste for luxury and magnificence, for a dazzling social life and a distinguished career. When things are going well for him, he tends to think of himself as the center of the universe, an attitude that those close to him do not always appreciate. Although he is quite likely to succeed in his ambition to become wealthy and popular and lead a remarkable life in the outer world, his lack of moderation and overweening self-confidence expose him to some danger. His exaggerated optimism could create difficulties for him by causing him to make errors in judgment.
Adaptation and Sensitivity:
Hypersensitive, Martin Luther King Jr. is extremely receptive to the mood in his surroundings. He is unconsciously able to perceive the parapsychic signals or aura people give off, in addition to their words. As a result, he is extremely compassionate and ready to devote himself to their well-being. His imagination has formulated the dream of an ideal life, and he sometimes feels ill-equipped for the realities of this existence. He tends to dodge difficult situations. With his partner, he seeks fusion.
Martin Luther King Jr. has a sensitive personality. He may jump to conclusions, which could disrupt relationships, as well as career plans. He is subject to cyclical energy flows and goes from periods of feverish activity to periods of withdrawal and introspection. The aggressive element in his behavior may be explained by emotional problems he may have experienced in infancy: his mother, or a mother figure, may have had an energetic and volatile personality.
Although his demeanor is cool and distant, Martin Luther King Jr. is extremely sensitive. In some cases, his rather austere and rigid behavior and refusal to yield too readily to sentimentality discourage others from being too demonstrative of their tenderness and affection. He has spells of melancholy in which he does not feel worthy of being loved and tends to forbid himself any emotional fulfillment. An austere or somewhat traumatic childhood experience may be the source of this behavior. It is difficult for his inner self to be detached from this past life, and he sometimes has trouble reconciling the image he has of himself as an adult with the one he acquired back then. The idea he has of himself as an individual is related to the image his parents projected onto him as a child. Nevertheless, the past is history, and he is now an adult. It should be easy for him to rid himself of these phantoms through self-work. He has the ability to overcome his mistakes, as well as great endurance and will power to achieve his goals. Nevertheless, he must not repress his sensitivity in order to succeed.
Sometimes sensitive and emotive, Dr. King cringed from life, passively hoping for a better future, a utopian society, or a transcendent state of consciousness. However, by taking refuge in dreams, he may have exposed himself to adversity, both socially and in his private life.
Martin Luther King Jr. does not always readily reveal himself, and he tends to protect his sensitivity. He has a penchant for intense emotions. Sexuality is a prominent element in his life, and his relationships, which are usually passionate, are motivated by his desires. He likes to understand the hidden side of people, their secret or unconfessed motivations. He would thus find a career which placed him in contact with troubled people especially rewarding.
Love and Sensuality:
Martin Luther King Jr.’s sensitivity may sometimes overwhelm his partners, and his compassion for the other is profound. He readily sacrifices his own interest to others, to provide help and assistance. A romantic as well as an idealist, he sometimes lacks discernment in the choice of his partners. He is fairly confused and evasive and has trouble expressing his feelings clearly. Nevertheless, he is capable of devoting himself entirely to the person he loves. He has a tendency to daydream and become lost in himself.
Martin Luther King Jr.’s birth chart indicates an emotional function which is usually expressed carefully and reasonably. Distrustful of his emotional urges and somewhat wary of his feelings, he tries to rid himself of all partiality and try to get some perspective and distance before making an emotional commitment.
Martin Luther King Jr. is subject to anxiety and sees himself as a fragile person at the mercy of uncontrollable emotions and feelings strong enough to overwhelm him. He tends to resign himself to circumstances and is liable to confine himself to a state of regretful self-denial, unless he seizes an opportunity to forge his moral strength in a constructive relationship, a religion, or a belief which lends him structure. His choice of a partner is thus crucial. Only a person who is tender yet strong, and reassuring yet flexible will be apt to help him find emotional fulfillment.
Paradox or instability may reign at times in Martin Luther King Jr.’s love life. There is some chance he will break some hearts around him with his lack of commitment. He attracts sentimental or naive partners of whom he usually tires quickly. Quarrels and reconciliation may alternate under his roof if he satisfies himself with a person who is not really a good match for him. Several marriages or unions are likely.
Mental and Intellect:
Martin Luther King Jr. is a flexible individual, and his intellectual faculties draw on sudden flashes of pure intuition as well as logical, rational thought. He has progressive, inventive, and sometimes utopian ideas; they usually relate to human or social problems. He always strives to be in the vanguard, creating a better world for the future.
