Consciousness and the ideal of self is explored through five papers. Papers I-IV discuss an examination of the relationship between consciousness and the self, while Paper V focuses on the implications of the ideal of self on social and political life.
Joe Avati is trying to overcome his feelings of insecurity. To do so, he needs a home: a dwelling, a territory, or perhaps a safe space or setting where he can rest, and let down his systems of defense against the outer world, which he finds aggressive and hostile. He is ready to make some sacrifices in order to maintain and consolidate the structure he has chosen. True inner security, based on real knowledge of himself, his abilities, and his shortcomings, his strengths and his weaknesses would no doubt be most effective and would allow him to remain open to the varieties of experience offered by the world.
Joe Avati has an extremely sensitive and receptive nature, and he tends to live in osmosis with his surroundings. His individuality almost seems to be diluted in a flood of sensations and impressions which are continually washing over him, and he sometimes finds it difficult to communicate his feelings to other people. This tide of emotion is a source of inspiration and intuition, but his fluid inner structure and organization sometimes make it difficult for him to grasp the essence of his dreams and share them with other people. Joe Avati is not at all combative, and this tends to hinder his efforts to fit into society and assert himself productively.
Joe Avati has a good balance between his need for movement and his tendency to be sedentary. He is just as likely to adapt to situations which require outbursts of initiative as to those which demand patience and perseverance.
Joe Avati is winning and attractive. He has an appetite for intense emotional experiences, especially in terms of his relationships. Enjoying the power of his personal appeal, he easily controls his emotions and only rarely reveals the true depth of his feelings. Because his instincts take precedence over his sensitivity, he is capable of becoming jealous, possessive, and even rather harsh, without meaning to. More of a flirt than a voluptuary, he is attentive to desire. As a result, his love life will sometimes be casual and complicated.
Joe Avati maintains strong ties with his past, and it often seems difficult for him to open his heart to new people. His love affairs might exist on the surface level, because his lust and sensual desire rarely turn into a need to understand, protect, and care for the other. Moreover, it is difficult for him to meet partners who combine the ideals of the tender parent and the great lover.
Joe Avati is optimistic and happy to be alive. He is cheerful, expansive, and pleasant to have around. He is extremely generous (sometimes to a fault!) and gives of himself and his belongings unstintingly. This positive psychological outlook is the result of a happy childhood and especially an extremely beneficial maternal influence in infancy. Joe is quite likely to be a professional success; his vision of the world is perfectly adapted to prevailing opinion, and his urges and desires for personal expansion usually elicit a positive reaction from society. By old age, his good reputation and prominence may have earned him fame.
Joe Avati has a good balance between his need for movement and his tendency to be sedentary. He is just as likely to adapt to situations which require outbursts of initiative as to those which demand patience and perseverance. Out of either shyness or caution, Joe Avati hides and protects his sensitivity behind a fairly cool, aloof exterior. He is fairly conservative, respectful of tradition and convention, and likes to follow the rules. Because he needs stability to alleviate his feelings of frustration and sometimes emotional dependency, Joe Avati has great faith in contracts which seal relationships. His ties to his past are fairly strong. They are a source of reassurance and safety, because his parents likely gave a lot to him.
Joe Avati has a good understanding of love and sensuality. He knows how to balance his need for intimacy with his need for freedom.
Joe Avati has fairly lofty amorous aspirations. The soulmate he imagines for himself is brilliant and dazzling with an array of talents and beauty. However, the gap between his splendid ideal and reality is sometimes wide. He should be careful not to confuse his romantic ideal with reality and become aware that his tendency to project may be a way of fleeing from himself.
Joe Avati's birth chart indicates an emotional function which is expressed in a direct and fairly impulsive way. He enjoys reaching out to other people and making discoveries. An eternal teenager with his gaze riveted on the future, he is imbued with an eminently subjective and personal idealism.
Joe Avati seems more apt to become accomplished than to live out emotional happiness. He is very ambitious and liable to sacrifice a pleasant lover to a socially useful and prominent person. In this case, his partner may turn out to be more preoccupied with their own glory than with him. At that point, he may work out his frustrations and emotional misadventures by surpassing their success with his own.
Joe Avati intensely passionate and ambitious, his early love affairs might have been disappointing. He cherished dreams of great things, but his partners turned out to be unexceptional and uninspiring. To find happiness in love, he would do well to learn to compromise and accept the other person as they really are.
Joe Avati has a great emotional ideal, full of subtlety and tenderness. However, he tends to be overwhelmed by his imagination and may not be selective enough when choosing a partner. His romantic and trusting nature may make him vulnerable. Although he strives to establish peaceful, uncomplicated relations, he sometimes experiences painful disappointments. His artistic delicacy and refinement provide him with a sincere love of the arts, music, and literature. He is likely to be a gifted poet.
Joe Avati has a strong mental and intellect.
Joe Avati has a fairly skeptical temperament which relies on remarkable analytic and critical faculties. He is sensitive and curious, a keen observer of facts who collects detailed information he will later pore over and analyze. This type of logical, rational mind is extremely efficient for elaborating methods or sorting and classifying information. However, he sometimes lacks flexibility or broad-mindedness.
Joe Avati tries to shun subjectivity and be as objective as possible. His thoughts are usually structured, and his reasoning, based on objective facts or experience, usually relates to practical goals.
